Scholarships for new students

Our aim is to provide as much financial assistance as possible, so if you win a scholarship it will apply to all years of your course.

We have an extensive scholarship programme to help well-qualified international students to study in Huddersfield.

All self-funding international applicants with overseas fee status applying for undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes will automatically be considered for these scholarships and will be notified of their assessed status in their offer letter and through our applicant portal.

Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievements and the standard of English language that an applicant will reach, so it is important to submit all of your transcripts with your application.

These scholarships are available for all start dates in the year and for the full duration and each year of a course. If you are accepted to progress from one of our undergraduate courses to one of our postgraduate courses you may also qualify for a generous progression scholarship.

The University will award named discretionary scholarships of £2,000 per annum to applicants who meet our criteria.  Applicants:

  • Will automatically be considered for an award when they apply for a course.
  • Must be international, full fee-paying applicants coming to study on campus in the UK.  Applicants with refugee or asylum-seeker status will not qualify, nor will students with leave to remain in the UK or those who are in the UK as dependants.
  • Must have applied for and obtained an offer to a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate taught programme at the University.  The International Foundation Year, International Diploma, Pre-Master's Programme, MBA any off-campus courses, and postgraduate research programmes are excluded from the scholarship scheme.
  • Should not be receiving sponsorship from other sources.  This includes official funding from Governments, Ministries, other scholarship programmes (i.e. Chevening or Commonwealth Shared Scholarships), or commercial organisations.

Progression scholarships:  for international students who are progressing from undergraduate to postgraduate programmes taught at the University.  You must have achieved a 2:1 (Upper Second) and be applying for postgraduate admission within two years of graduation to be considered eligible for one of these awards.  International students progressing from off-campus programmes are eligible for bursaries under this scheme.  No separate application is required.  The criteria relating to visa status, as set out above, apply.

Courses excluded from this scheme include the Pre-Master’s Programme, and English Language programmes.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme: The University offers two scholarships for international students from Commonwealth countries on an annual basis.  These cover tuition fees, travel to and from the UK, and a stipend to cover living expenses.  Please access http://www.cscuk.org.uk for eligibility criteria.  Applications cannot be considered unless you have also applied to study on an eligible programme at the University of Huddersfield.

Chevening awards: The University participates in this prestigious scheme operated through the Foreign Office of the UK Government.

Research bursaries: Partial or full awards may be available for students on postgraduate research programmes.  Please access the Research Office web pages for further details.

Accommodation

Rent will most likely be your biggest expenditure.  Fortunately Huddersfield has reasonably-priced student accommodation and private rental costs are very low in comparison with many other UK cities.

Accommodation costs vary according to type of room and whether the rent includes utilities (gas, electricity and water).  Prices in 2009/10 ranged from £65.95 a week for a single room,  £66.95 per person for two students sharing a double room, to single deluxe at £85.95.  All prices are based on a 43-week contract.  The student accommodation complexes at Storthes Hall and Ashen Hurst are owned by DIGS who have an office on campus.

General expenditure

Huddersfield has excellent shopping facilities for everyday needs, and prices are very reasonable.  A wide range of authentic international food is available in local shops and you should have no problem in finding suitable fare whatever your dietary requirements.
